Ava’s Shells is a creative small business that transforms ordinary oyster shells into beautiful, one-of-a-kind ornaments, wine stoppers, and napkin rings. What started as a fun idea shared by her mom has blossomed into a growing business fueled by Ava’s artistic flair, family support, and a passion for unique designs. Each piece she creates tells a story—thoughtfully crafted, locally sourced, and always made with heart.
CEM: Tell us about your business.
I make several different things out of oyster shells, including ornaments, wine stoppers and napkins rings.
CEM: How did you first get the idea?
My mom saw the idea on the internet and shared it with me. I remember her saying, you could make this. I first started out by making dishes using different shells. Then I started using oyster shells to create ornaments and other items.
CEM: What supplies and resources did you need to get started?
I need the basic supplies that you can get at a craft store, such as mod podge glue, clear coat, and gold leafing. I also use a variety of different prints including tissue paper and napkins. When creating the ornaments, I am very fortunate that my family also helps out. My dad, papa and my Uncle Kevin all take turns helping me drill the holes for the ornament hooks. And most importantly you need shells! I love creating personalized oysters for people who want a particular print or design. Each oyster is different and the items that I create are always unique and special in their own little way.
CEM: How did you get a hold of your supplies? (specifically the shells)
I get the shells from different places. I find them at beaches, friends who know about my business donate them, and I also find them in the Northern Neck area. I try to find unique shells everywhere I go and collect them whenever I can.
CEM: What are some challenges you’ve faced in business, and how did you overcome them?
I am always trying to think of new products that I can make using shells. When gluing the oyster shells to make wine stoppers, I had to experiment with different types of glue. In the beginning, I used Gorilla Glue but it took 20 minutes per wine cork to set and it took forever. I started researching new ways and I found this new glue that uses an UV light and it works much better. It is still a process and I’m always doing research and trying new ideas.
CEM: Do you have any advice for other aspiring kid entrepreneurs?
You can truly do anything you put your mind to. If you see an idea that excites you or something that you find interesting, you too can create it. You have to be patient and have perseverance. Starting a business can be time consuming, but if you use your time wisely and set goals you can succeed. I personally started my business small with only one product, but then I gradually started to create more items. Sometimes it’s better to start small so that you can learn and then gradually increase to reach the next level within your business.
CEM: How can potential customers get in touch with you?
I recently created business cards to include with my items and have them available for customers at local shows. I also have an instagram account to show my products and share upcoming events.
